HUD explores humanitarian design dilemmas in Colombia (and the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Colombia’s humanitarian landscape is dramatic. Multiple non-international armed conflicts are ongoing in the country, with non-state armed groups present in over 50% of the country’s municipalities. These groups carry out targeted killings, restrict the mobility of the population, and other oppressive acts affecting almost 10 million people. Millions of people are internally displaced across Colombia, and millions of Venezuelan refugees now live in Colombia. These political factors, alongside climate change-linked flood and drought patterns have also led to severe food insecurity risks across the country, as well as a lack of access to quality healthcare and other social services. At the same time, Colombia is host to a vibrant and important research and civil society sector militating for change across the country, actors with whom HUD is collaborating in its core design activities.
